With cell towers out of commission across the country, they would be unable to operate. Gardner-Stephena research fellow at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, now leads a project that enables Android phones to do just that.
Servalas the project is called, offers an app that allows nearby phones to link up using their Wi-Fi connections, as long as they have been modified to disable the usual security restrictions.
Voice calls, text messages, file transfers, and more can take place between devices with the Serval app installed. But the combination of relatively cheap smartphones and Wi-Fi routers with the progress made by open-source projects such as Serval means that creating and operating such networks is now becoming possible without specialist knowledge.
The networks offer free Internet access by extending the reach of free connections offered by community centers; they also provide Web services and apps that function only within the local mesh.

Gauging the size of the building is an important step in deciding which device to buy. If you can't get reliable Wi-Fi somewhere in your house, and moving the router isn't feasible, first decide where in the house the signal seems to always drop or isn't as strong as you'd like. If your only issue is that you get some Wi-Fi sometimesbut it often drops, then placing a repeater between that space and the router to give the signal a little push is probably all you need.
In this case, there's no compelling reason to upgrade the entire Wi-Fi network with new mesh devices. However, if you find that the signal is weak close to the router and there's still plenty of house left that needs Wi-Fi, then chances are slim that a repeater placed right there can forward the signal to the rest of the home unless your house is quite small.

Since a repeater relies on an existing network that you already have to repeat the signal, it's the only thing that you need to buy, whereas a mesh network is its own entire system, replacing your existing network.
You might, however, be able to purchase a mesh network with just two separate hubs to bring the price down. All things considered, aside from cost, a mesh network is very often the best way to go since it's almost guaranteed that a quality system can provide Wi-Fi for almost any sized home. However, it's also easy for a mesh system to be more than you need in a smaller home.
Yyou might not need to buy a repeater or a mesh system if you can manage to just move the router to a better location. For example, if your router is hidden beneath a desk in your basement, chances are slim that it can reach outside to your garage; moving it to the main floor, or at least away from the desk obstruction, might be enough. If that doesn't work, upgrading to a long-range router or replacing the router's antennas might be less expensive.
Another downside to mesh networks is that you have multiple devices positioned throughout your house.Traditionally, setting up Wi-Fi over a large area required a fair amount of sophistication. Doing it inexpensively often required repurposing low-end routers to avoid the high cost of dedicated access points APs.
That situation has changed dramatically, with literally dozens of companies now offering some type of mesh networking system that provides plug and play wireless access suitable for larger homes and small offices.
When it works, having a mesh of Wi-Fi access points provides an easy-to-administer system with seamless coverage and quick transitions from one AP to another as devices move around. Some mesh network systems also only require one wired node, with the remainder talking to each other wirelessly.
Without a mesh network, or at least a common administration platform, you would have to set parameters on each AP individually, and typically either connect each of them to a wired network, or set some up as repeaters. Vendors are still charging a premium for mesh solutions, but the explosion in competition is changing that situation very quickly. They are easier to deploy and maintain than an ad hoc system of a router and extenders, and being custom-built for this application, also typically offer better performance.
Because all the devices communicate, they can also automatically allocate channels based on usage, noise, and to minimize interference with each other. Once you have a good idea of the area you want to cover, some analysis is in order. Evaluate where it might be possible to place wired APs, and think about which locations would be suitable for small, stylish models and which could tolerate industrial-looking versions.
If you need outdoor coverage for an extensive area, you may also want to tap into a system that includes a weatherproof model. Not content to stick with simple networking hubs, companies have begun to add Smart Home features to their mesh networking solutions. Many of the newest solutions rely heavily on the cloud. That can be great for auto updating. But it means you can be susceptible to outages caused by server issues, and that information about your home is being sent off to who knows where.
Google, for example, has made no secret of the fact that it data mines information from its consumer devices. Traditional systems like Ubiquiti offer a typical network management console that you access through a browser interface. Ubiquiti even couples that with a USB dongle that can run network management software without needing to leave a machine running.

Perhaps the trickiest part of the installation was working around the fact that default mesh network instructions assume that the first unit you install is also going to be your primary router, and you need access to the cloud to get started.
In our case, we have a failover router and firewall that sits between us and everything else, so the Orbi units needed to be set up as only access points. Orbi provides a simple colored light to indicate how successful the satellite is at pairing and getting signal from the main unit.
