Cold headed parts denote a type of finished or stock shape produced through a specialized process more broadly known as cold working or cold forming.

Although the terms "cold working," "cold forming," and " cold heading " are often used interchangeably, cold heading is technically a subset of the larger group of manufacturing processes known as cold working or cold forming. Cold heading specifically refers to the process of enlarging sections on the end of tubular pieces such as rods or wires. However, a proper understanding of cold heading can only occur within the larger context of cold working as a subject.

The term "cold working" is slightly misleading since it suggests that these metallurgical processes occur at very low temperatures. In reality, the term cold working refers primarily to the absence of extreme heat. Instead of being pre-heated, most cold-worked materials are merely processed and formed by machines at ambient temperatures. In most cases, ambient temperatures are equal to normal room temperatures. Cold working is broadly characterized by two traits.

Recrystallization refers to the formation of new grains within a material at elevated temperatures. In some cases, cold-working does occur at temperatures above normal room ones. If the recrystallization point is not reached, however, these types of scenarios would still qualify as cold working.

In addition, cold working is characterized by the use of mechanical stress in the place of heat to induce shape change. Although specific actions and machines vary based upon the material and desired outcome, most cold forming processes utilize extreme pressure to cause the plastic deformation of metals, resulting in desired internal and external component characteristics.

This emphasis on mechanical pressure distinguishes cold working from hot working processes which deform metals using extreme heatdie casting processes in which molten metal is poured into a moldand screw machining processes in which metal is removed rather than reshaped.Mechanical design and assembly firms turn to Sussex Wire for their most advanced near-net-shape part requirements to eliminate material scrap, increase mechanical strength and reduce costly secondary and assembly operations.

Cold heading manufacturing is a multi-step process used to form metal parts at room temperature. Unlike other metal fabrication processeshammers and dies are used at a high speed to form the metal without heating the material. A large coil of wire is fed into a blank and pulled through a drawing machine. The drawing machine compresses the material to the desired diameter. It then passes into the cold heading machine. Inside the cold heading machine, the blank is hit between a die and a punch block, pushing the material into the die to create the desired shape.

We use two separate techniques for forcing the material into the die. With the upset method, the punch block forces the metal out of the die to produce a head larger than the initial blank. The extrusion technique includes two methods, forward and backward extrusion. With forward extrusion, the cavity of the two dies is smaller compared to the diameter of the wire, which creates compression.

With backward extrusion, the metal is forced backward through a punch to create a hole or cavity. Cold heading is commonly used for creating custom screws, bolts, and other custom fasteners out of round metal stock. Cold forming comes with advantages and disadvantages compared to other machining processes, such as screw machining. While using a screw machine may eliminate the need for dies, cold forming requires dies to set the head shapes, which increases the lead time and initial cost.

However, cold heading includes many benefits:. Using cold heading for your parts reduces material waste. More of the material is utilized during the cold forming process.

Formnet Inc. - Cold Forming Manufacturer

This limits scrap and overall costs. Cold forming produces net-shaped or near net-shaped parts. This limits the finishing process, resulting in faster production cycles. The process itself is also faster compared to machining with averages of about 80 to parts per minute. Our cold forming process accounts for grain flow, resulting in stronger parts compared to machining.

The grain flow lines follow the structure of the part due to material compression, which increases durability. We may even help reduce overall unit costs during the design process. Cold forming may allow for a simpler design, limiting the need for multi-die designs or complex geometry. Simpler designs and less scrap help limit the cost of the manufacturing process and decrease your bottom line. At The Federal Group, our cold heading process ensures that your parts match the desired shape and specifications of your project.

We only use top-of-the-line equipment, materials, and processes to form parts. Our team also has experience working with a variety of materials :.

No matter if you need simple stainless steel parts or complex parts from blended materials, we can produce a high-quality product to meet your needs. We ensure that the finished part matches your specifications, thanks to our thorough quality assurance process. Because the volume of the blank is being hammered into a die and there is no cutting required, the process has little or no scrap. Cold heading creates stronger pieces much more efficiently.By blending cold forming technology including heading, threading and systematic tool forming designs with secondary machining, WCS Industries has a unique capability to engineer and manufacture long term, cost effective solutions for our customers.

This produces one finished product per machine cycle. Through this process, it is possible to produce complex precision parts at high speed with little or no material waste. Roll forming takes the headed part and through a rolling process creates a thread form, with the finished piece being stronger than cut or machined threads. Of course, there are times when design features can require precision machining. At WCS, we also have extensive machining experience using a full range of automatic multi-spindle screw machines and CNC machining centers.

For your component, our engineers will utilize state-of-the-art methods to develop the manufacturing process with the optimum production techniques in order to deliver a cost effective and superior performing solution.

The car was upgraded as well, fantastic. We loved staying at the Basecamp Trapper's hotel. The place was really interesting and the staff very nice. We pass along a special thanks to Lise at the hotel for her exceptional customer service and friendly personality. We also enjoyed the trip to Isfjord Radio, our wonderful guide Harri, and the great meals they served. Our 2 hour maxibus trip around Longyearbyen the day we arrived was a good introduction to the area.

We made 2 changes to the package tour itinerary, and they ended up being the best parts of the trip. The first was a hike to Trollsteinen, which we included in our itinerary from the beginning, and it was amazing (for those who love to hike). The second was a change we made at the last minute. On our last day we were signed up for an ATV trip, but it would have been to basically the same place we had seen the first day on the maxibus trip. We heard about a 10-hour boat trip to Pyramiden and Nordenskjoldbreen and booked it the night before.

We loved this trip, with all we learned and the opportunity to see more of Spitsbergen. It added so much to our Svalbard experience, and we were so grateful we added this in. Something else that we really enjoyed on our trip was the Svalbard museum. It is very well done and we appreciated what we learned here. We have now used Nordic Visitor for 3 different trips.

We keep coming back to you because you take such good care of us and give us the trips we want. All of the hotels were well located and clean -having GPS in the car rental was well worth it and made getting into the cities so much easier -being picked up upon arrival at the airport is a great service after having spent so many hours in transit. A long sought after vacation resulted in a fascinating experience, and this result must also be credited to the careful preparation and to the friendly professional assistance of your consultants.

On site, the service was impeccable under all aspects. We still did it all. The quality of the tour guide, Hinrik, added an additional magic to the stunning landscape of Iceland. Playful and intriguing story telling, deep historical and geological knowledge and lots of fun.

It created a wonderful dynamic for the group and inspired everyone to not just look but to also engage with Iceland.

It was a bonus that we also saw the Aurora. Currently, people are talking about a one way ticket to Mars - I 'd say try Iceland first. You did a fabulous job, considering we gave you very little time to prepare the itinerary, in high season. Sindre Matthiasson was excellent. He was quick to provide a response to any questions I had and I found him to be very accommodating regarding my requests.

Iceland is a destination unlike any of the others we have visited. Given the remote nature of parts of the country and the possibility of weather related issues I found the service that Nordic Visitor provided enabled us to enjoy our adventure freely with a minimum of anxiety. We were very happy with Nordic Visitor and the service we were provided with. Everyone was very helpful and very responsive. We were extremely satisfied with our experience with Nordic Visitor.
