Electrical Question from John about Repairing Electrical Wiring Background: John, a Handyman from Flint, MI Question: Is there any suspected problems when lights flicker on and off in your house and appliances turn on and off by themselves?

Most often this is the symptom of a deteriorating connection that is occurring most likely at the electrical panel. The suspect areas are the neutral wire terminations, a main breaker that is starting to go bad, a main circuit breaker connection to the buss, a main service termination in a lug, or a splice that is going bad at the main overhead electrical service connection from the electrical utility company.

A condition such as this will deteriorate over time and has the potential of requiring a major electrical repair job.

The first thing I recommend is to call your electrical utility company and explain the occurrences. Most utility companies will dispatch a service technician who will inspect their side of the service wiring. If they do not find any problems then I would call a licensed electrical contractor who can perform a series of inspections and tests which will identify the problem.

This could be a serious condition which requires professional attention. The Non-Contact Electrical Tester This is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test.

Very handy and easy to use. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring. It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.

The Wire Stripper and Wire Cutter My absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires. This handy tool has multiple uses: The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation.

The end of the tool can be used to grip and bend wire which is handy for attaching wire onto the screw terminals of switches and outlets.

The wire stripper will work on both solid and stranded wire. This tool is Very Handy and Easy to Use. I plugged in my Christmas lights, when they come on they go on and off. I cannot figure out what the problem is, maybe you can help.

It was just static. I got up and turned it off. A couple of minutes later it turned on again. I finally unplugged it and it didn't turn on again. I'm skeptical about paranormal things, and am thinking there's probably a much more plausible explanation. I'd like to know what it is.

Of course, maybe it's just ghosts Anyone have any ideas? Okay, not to spoil your fun, but it's just a malfunction. Something is loose in the connection. There was usually a connection that just needed to be re-soddered. Its kinetic energy that frequently interferes with electrical appliances. Everyone has kinetic energy, stored as potential energy. If your brain is emitting the right frequency common right when you are about to fall asleepit often emits kinetic energy which has unusual effects on electronic equiptment.

I used to have a tv in my bedroom, but every night, just when I was about to fall asleep it would turn on and startle the crap out of me. That is when I learned about kinetic energy. Its more common than you may think. There is so many facets to the human mind. Explore them. Ok, your radio comes on for no reason. You get up, go over and turn it off. The third time, you just un plug it.

Second time, you did same thing again. If not by you, then who??

Electrical devices do not move, with out out side influences.Log in or Sign up. Joined: Jul 16, Location: Virginia. We have had a problem with electrical devices turning themselves on at random times for over a year. At first it was funny, now it's upsetting.

Until now, the only devices that tuned themselves on were those that had remote controls: the sound system amp for the home theater, the light on a little electric fireplace, the set top box for DirecTV. This time though, the motor on the JennAir range that locks the door prior to a self-clean cycle started itself.

Until the range problem, we chalked it up to our obnoxious neighbors who have hacked our internet and cable TV for years.

We guessed that they were just running something that caused the various remote controls to operate from time to time. Now that it's the stove, that theory is obviously wrong as there is no remote control to trigger on the range. Could this be a a problem in the house wiring - like a ground wire problem? We had an electrical storm the night before the oven door lock started on it's own, but the door lock motor started on it's own later the next morning.

Any advice as to how to proceed is greatly appreciated. But please - no one suggest an exorcist as that joke is getting old and we're actually pretty upset about this.

PamCrJul 16, Sounds like you have power problems. Many things do not start properly when the power gets interrupted for a short term. If you have a smart meter, then that is a different story. Good luck.

IR needs line-of-sight, RF does not, it'll go through walls, limited by the structure and distance. RF remotes don't usually have more than a couple of channels, so it's not uncommon.

If you have one, try going to the setup; to change to an alternate channel. Surges on the power lines doesn't have to be big to damage things These can be cumulative, of course, 'the big one' can damage things the first time, but lots of smaller ones are more stealthy - you may not notice it until it fails that it is on the threshold of failure. All it takes is one near miss, and it will have paid for itself many times over.

If the stove has a programmable clock, then it may be best to Kill its breaker for a few minuets so that the processor can reset.Log in or Sign up. Joined: Oct 10, Location: Placerville california. Hows it going My brother and I recently moved into a new home and its giving us some electrical trouble. This is whats happening. Ill be sitting watching tv and randomly the all the lights will start flickering sometimes the tv, oven, mirowave, satalite box will just shut off and come back on when the lights are flickering.

I was outside last night and noticed the outside lights go off and on with the rest of the stuff when the inside lights flicker. A friend told us that hes seen it happen before. He said he thought it was happening because the wires going to the well are to small of a gauge so when it draws power it messes everything up.

What would you guys expect the culprit to be? I started typing the things that I knew that could cause these symptoms but after an hour of typing I decided to delete everything and just say several things could be causing this but I can all but bet you the well is not one of them.

Maybe it is time to call a professional. I had dreams of all types of ghostly beings running around the kitchen turning the microwave on and off and flipping switches to make the lights come on and off. Any motor be it for a well pump or a heat pump will be a high draw item when starting unless it is designed not to be such as a soft start motor. If your home is at the end of a line or the transformer supplying your home also supplies many other homes you will be at the low end of the supplied voltage.

At my house we are the first home on the grid and the only home on the transformer. Our voltage to ground is always over My brother is one of several people off a transformer and turning on the living room ceiling fan causes the lights to flicker.

Why do radios sometimes turn on by themselves?

His voltage averages around to The well plays no role in either case but the voltages supplied does. Neither the voltage supplied by the utility or the motors starting will make the microwave oven start back all by itself once it is off. You may want to look into something that is in there that turns that microwave back on.What's the problem? Ac equipment. My electrical equipment keeps turning itself on For the last few years without fail at least once a week my TV would turn itself on and this happened at about 1. I unplugged my TV and this seemed to stop the problem. Then the problem started with my printer which started to turn itself on at least once a week again at around 1.

Last year this problem seemed to stop for a short while and I also unplugged my printer. Anyway since I have met someone and we are living together, every night without fail my printer turns itself on and starts to make the same noise, I then unplugged it and believe it or not my laptop started to turn itself on so I unplugged it and then my iPod would turn itself on. What can this be? Please advise me on this.

Also, my room gets very cold some nights even when the heating is on. And, I sense a presence and both my partner and I have seen shadows in my room. Please let me know your thoughts. I am serious and this is not a prank. I take posts on this forum very seriously so rest assured I do believe you. I had other suggestions when it was just your TV turning on I have dealt with this problem myself.

Unless you live by something that deals with an extremely high electro magnetic field I am very curious as to how all these other devices are finding themselves on at about the same time.FAQ on Coronavirus and Mefi : check before posting, cite sources; how to block content by tags. Appliances turning on spontaneously: When? How often?! Googling has turned up some product recall notices and grisly photos of burns, but I'm more interested in personal experiences--have you ever experienced a small appliance spontaneously turning on?

What happened? I was home for lunch today and moved some jute placemats to my porcelain-top cooking range water had spilled on them and I needed them off the countertopthen forgot to move them before I returned to work.

So this question has a neurotic basis, of course, which is where I figure out whether it's worth it for me to return home and move the placemats, if my range were to spontaneously turn on, or if the chance of that happening is just laughably low. I'm also just curious about how common this phenomenon is, and how people react when it does.

Are you wondering about small appliances, or regular appliances? A cooking range is just a standard appliance, not a "small appliance", which general refers to mixers and toasters and the like. That said, this is not a common phenomenon, at all.

Why do radios sometimes turn on by themselves?

Especially with something like a range, this would only be the result of a serious problem, and if it happened regularly, would result in a recall. I wouldn't worry about this at all.

I would say laughably low or lower. I should have clarified that I am also interested in the spontaneous combustion of objects that are plugged into an electrical outlet, if that ever happens. I'm aware that it is a separate phenomenon but I'm fascinated that something could power itself on and heat up without direct human intervention. And this is a space that I rent from elderly landlords; I'm guessing that any recall would have gone unnoticed by them.

Just fwiw, and thanks!! It was the kind with a memory this was in the s and I presume something had made it spit out whatever was stored in there. Unfortunately I didn't think to check the ribbon, and there wasn't any paper in it.

We have a central vacuum cleaner with various outlets spread around the house. They're all connected together by low-voltage wire and when an outlet is open and the hose plugged in, a circuit is completed and the central unit, located in the garage, turns on.

Switch off only lights, keep other electrical appliances on - Power officials - TV9

There are also a couple of "electric dustpans", little slots along the baseboards that you can open with your toe to sweep dust into, where it is then sucked into the vacuum.

Last year, the system turned itself on and wouldn't shut off. We had to unplug the power to the main unit. It took me a couple hours of troubleshooting. All the outlets and dustpans were good. Eventually I narrowed it down to one of the wires going to one of the dustpans. The wire was in the wall and I had to run an entirely new wire to fix it. So obviously something shorted out the wire but I'll be damned if I can figure out what did it.

Nothing had been nailed in or changed, we don't have roaches or rodents and there's no way our cat could have gotten to it. So that's a long winded way of saying "sorta. I've never heard of a stove turning on by itself, though. The only way I could think it could happen is if it wasn't turned off properly, with the knob in that little area between "low" and "off" where just a little tap could turn it either way. My dad's house had this stupid X10 system where lights and outlets would turn on and off according to a preset pattern which slowly degraded over time and at one point we had lights that we literally could no longer turn on and had to rip the wall apart to find the transmitter.

For a while there was a shopvac system in the basement that was plugged into an outlet that would activate sort of randomly every few weeks.I am male but I just want to share my experience as a SLIder.

Tough to explain but instead of focusing energy between the palms, try just holding the hands with the fingertips very close, and keep them like that for a few minutes.

Then try to push your fingers together gently and feel them repel away from each other. I think that is similar to or maybe a step towards creating a ball of energy between the palms. Because there is a secret, emotional need hidden within his heart that he craves more than anything.
