Silicon Valley's newest darling seemingly came out of nowhere. One day we were all walking around the streets on two feet like the dumb ape descendants we are; the next, we were tearing down city sidewalks, wind in our hair, waving at the rest of the bipedal plebs from the perch of an electric scooter. In the blink of an eye, thousands of them — from companies like Bird and Lime — appeared in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The scooters were here to save us: from showing up to that meeting 10 minutes late; from having to order that five-block Uber; from 20th-century public transit systems.
Scooters: Good! For this disruption, our scooting saviors were rewarded with multibillion-dollar valuations. But weeks later, a new narrative emerged. Scooters: Bad! They were a nuisance clogging our sidewalks and disrupting traffic. They were dangerous — illegal, even. A venture-funded pox on our streets. I spent a week traveling across the country trying to find out. I spoke to surf bros making thousands charging scooters on Venice Beach, city planners in Memphis, concerned neighborhood watch groups, and the scooter companies themselves.
I listened to countless arguments in favor of scooters and against them. I logged dozens of miles on Bird and Lime scooters. I wore an absurd helmet. I was mocked and celebrated. I managed not to die. The conclusion might be a cop-out, but it gets at a key tension in our relationship with technology. Technology enables connection, expediency, convenience, world-improving advances. But it also inspires dependence and enables manipulation, harassment, radicalization, election interference.
And those things, the bad things, are a strong cause to consider what we sacrificed for a more convenient and connected world. Scooters are something of a case study in this.Simplest Electric Bike Wiring Diagram
They are silly, but they are also a potentially elegant solution to the thorny last-mile problem with mass transit. The way they appeared on the streets overnight is a good example of Silicon Valley's "innovate first, ask questions later" mindset. Scooter companies seem keen on rewiring the transportation systems of our cities, but it's not entirely clear that they'll take responsibility for the unintended consequences of their technology: A scooter ensured that I wasn't late to an important meeting.
A scooter knocked me off the sidewalk and onto my knees. Are scooter startups really worth billions? There are plenty of good arguments that they should be. If they do usher in a new era of micromobility — the so-called unbundling of modern transportation — we might be less dependent on cars for the vast majority of our transit needs.

But there are clear downsides. They're unregulated. They can be a real annoyance on the sidewalks and streets. When they are vandalized or hurled into rivers, ponds, and oceans, they are an environmental hazard.

One common issue with hub motors is broken or shorted wires at the point where the wires exit the motor axle. If the wires are tugged or twisted the sharp edges of the hub motor axle can cut through the wire insulation or completely sever the wires. Most hub motors employ hall sensors to tell the controller the motor position.
Hall sensors are easily burnt out if the signal wires short to power or ground. The motor shown below stopped functioning after the wires were damaged. A quick test showed that the hall sensors were burnt out.

Swapping the roles of stator and armature are puzzling to me, especially regarding the wiring. Using a cheap hub motor over volted on a mid drive sounds perfect to me. I think Simon nailed it. Using a hub motor as a non-hub would add a huge amount of torque, and since it creates a lot of copper mass, it will tolerate many more watts than the current factory non-hub bikes.

Actually you get cheap 35A controllers from China that run sensor OR sensorless hub motors for as little as bucks. Home builders of course do not have access to low price China workers to build there controllers for them. Most home builders i know spend more time building than they do riding. I am one of the few people I know who does not know how to Solder, and do not count soldering as one of the skills I want to pick up. There is a big separation in thinking between the leaders of the DIY scene, and what is actually selling in the real world.
The kits that seem to be selling the best are kits that are easy to connect such as the bionx kit with the motor and controller built into hub fewer wires and other kits which are overpriced Chinese kits with good support, clean websites, and quick connectors. These kits are easy to install, and its easier to hide the integrated wiring system. Wooow wow, hold on. Why there are on sale? What happened to Bird and Lime that they are selling those? Which are probably criminally highway theft level of fees. Towing companies should die. And the tow yard can still sue the owner for the difference between the fees charged and what the lot went for at auction. If it was better for them, they would. Expect the batteries to be dead or damaged, and the mechanical components being on their last legs. These city-bike type schemes always end up with the equipment breaking down on the way, or intentionally stolen, abused and wrapped around a streetlight, thrown in ditches and pools, or just kicked and beaten to bits etc.
Then they get picked up by the authorities or cleaning companies from where they happen to lay, tossed in the back of a truck in a pile, and taken to the impound lot. They see a lot of abuse along the way. But this was here in my city. They confiscated them in early mid october and they were just placed for a few weeks.
Most of these should be in pretty good condition!!!
