The Novation Summitintroduced at Superboothis a new flagship synthesizer that essentially combines two of their Peak synthesizers into a knob-filled keyboard. It offers deep synthesis capabilities, a voice two-part multitimbral engine and a hands-on workflow.

The Summit is based on a hybrid synth architecture that starts with their digital New Oxford Oscillators; follows that with true stereo analog signal path, with analog multimode VCFs, VCAs and three analog distortion sections; and adds powerful digital effects.

These synths are more capable than almost all of the vintage greats, yet people seem to have no clue about how good we got it right now! Yamaha is plastic fantastic nowadays…horrible imo…yes i care for aesthetic. Ive both an sequential and a yamaha synth btw. The peak summit has nice looks, like sequential has in general or moog with an sub 37 for example…for my taste.

I think manufactures deserve a compliment if they deliver good sounding synths with ALSO nice looks. The new Moogs manage to pull this off, though the designs are polarizing now. Butch lad make it work. The Summit looks like a great synth to me. The comments on this blog recently have been baffling. I wonder who the hell posts so enthusiastically yet wrongly.

And now here we are. I mean, what can I say? Split or stack them for keyboard-divided or layered sounds, or switch the entire synth between two separate and independently controlled setups, perhaps using one as an effects processor for an external input source.

On multitimbrality of this synth a lot was already written, as well as for the peak: novation here just stacked two monotimbral peaks, which achitecture seems to not allow multitimbrality implementation. What exactly are you expecting from this?

On the sonic front, both the Prologue 8 and 16 deliver massively and we found them very inspiring to work with, despite some limitations. The character is definitely Minilogue-like at times but bigger and bolder and the filter with low cut sounds great, with bags of personality. However, it also delivers huge bass and cutting, searing leads, classic FM sounds, warm fibrous pads and punchy synth-brass — a testament to the versatile sound engine.

This polyphonic analog ok, hybrid synth, fitted with a note keyboard, has been sorely needed for many years. Bass Station IIput on the market inis still an extremely successful Novation product.

Its polyphonic rack version, the 8-voice synthesizer PEAK, followed in and commands a much improved sound architecture. Building on that, the keyboard version has a double PEAK engine — 16 voices!

This instrument has just 2 oscillators per voice, no wavetables and a slightly reduced modulation matrix, but comes with its own note step-sequencer — in addition to the arpeggiator. Another possible competitor to Summit is the Korg Prologue This fiddly, but creative OSCar option remains unrivalled. But would you like more? Admittedly, these are just the keywords, the facts.

Hardware-wise, Summit has a lovely, five-octave keybed which, in line with the rest of the hardware, feels premium. Notably, the black keys have a wider top surface than most and these feel great. Velocity and aftertouch response is spot-on too; this is a very playable, precise and nicely-balanced synth-action keybed.

This makes it easy to focus on each synth individually or together by simply pressing A, B, or A and B together to edit each panel simultaneously. This works slickly and all the panel lighting moves from blue to red to denote which panel is being edited. Each of the three oscillators onboard features analogue-style waveforms, plus 17 wavetables giving a vast range of tonal possibilities. Summit has its own strong sonic imprint which is precise when required but with plenty of ways to add analogue soul too the beauty of digital oscillators mated to analogue filters.

It can approximate the tone of both classic digital and analogue synths with its nearest rivals, sonically and feature-wise, being the Prophet REV2 16 and Prophet On the subject of modulation, Summit has a plethora of options available and all are easy to dial in either from the front panel directly or via the two slot modulation matrices per layer with 17 sources and 37 destinations and depth control.

This is accessed via the screen, menus and buttons. There are two polyphonic audio-rate LFOs per-voice with low and high rate modes and two further global LFOs, along with two mod envelopes. Each oscillator has LFO 2 hardwired to pitch on the front panel for ease or you can dive deeper into the mod matrix for further assignments or re-routing.

The mod matrix itself is a breeze to use and ensures you can get very deep and complex with your mods for twisting your sonics.

Key features

For example, in addition to Envelope 1 ampyou have two further assignable mod envelopes Mod Env. All the envelopes now with direct loop buttons on the front panel too sound snappy and detailed, aiding the creation of some punchy bass, drum and perc sounds. Coupled with the killer analogue filters and VCA, plus the various distortion and overdrive stages and effectsyou get some very complex dual-layer textured sonics, nicely analogue-like pads and leads and with all the mod options and new four FX Mod slots plus aftertouch you can get some altogether more futuristic stuff going.

Consequently emulating other dual filter synths such as the MS, Oscar and MatrixBrute is now possible. This gives several controllable distortion flavours. One huge improvement over the Peak is a stereo audio input to route external sources through these lovely filters and the effects.

All the effects are great, complementing the oscillators perfectly. This all sounds much bigger than the Peak due to there being double the voices! Summit is the best of the already-great Peaks, with double the polyphony and all the criticisms from my Peak review addressed.
